The Story of Abraham
With Malice Toward None
On March 4, 1865, standing beneath a rainy sky at his second inauguration, Lincoln spoke with unusual tenderness: 'with malice toward none, with charity for all.' He had won reelection, but the war had carved grief into him. Just weeks later, on April 14, he went to Ford's Theatre with Mary Todd Lincoln and was shot by John Wilkes Booth. The next morning he died. Crowds wept from Washington to Springfield, and the words of that final spring outlived him.
