The Story of Adam
Constantinople, November 1855
In 1855, at fifty-six, Mickiewicz traveled to Constantinople to organize Polish legions to fight Russia in the Crimean War. He had been a poet, a professor, a mystic, an exile. Now he was recruiting soldiers in a foreign city. He died there on November 26, 1855, likely of cholera. His body was eventually returned to Poland and buried at Wawel Cathedral in Kraków, among kings. He had spent his life fighting for a country that didn't officially exist.
