The Story of Alexander
The Long Train Home
In May 1994, Solzhenitsyn returned to Russia after twenty years of exile. He flew into Vladivostok and traveled west by train across the entire country, stopping to speak with workers, teachers, and local officials. He wanted to see Russia as it actually was, not from Moscow. He arrived in Moscow two months later. He was seventy-five. He spent his remaining years writing a four-volume history of the Russian Revolution. He died in August 2008, still working.
