Rejected at Home, Honored Abroad
The Russian Academy of Sciences voted against admitting Mendeleev in 1880, one vote short. He never joined. The Nobel Committee came within one vote of awarding him the prize in 1906; the committee chose Moissan instead. He died on February 2, 1907 in Saint Petersburg, aged 72. Element 101, discovered in 1955, was named mendelevium. The table he built is still the one used today.
