The Story of Marcus
Vindobona, 180 AD
Marcus Aurelius died on March 17, 180, at Vindobona, modern Vienna, still at the front. The wars were unfinished. His son Commodus, whom he had raised and trained, became one of Rome's worst emperors. The Meditations survived by accident, passed through Byzantine copyists, and resurfaced centuries later. Today they remain the most widely read work of ancient philosophy, a book written for no audience that found every audience.
