The Story of Salvador
The Museum Is His Tomb
In 1974, Dalí opened the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, built inside a bombed-out theater. It contains the largest collection of his work and is the most visited museum in Spain after the Prado. Gala died on June 10, 1982. Dalí stopped painting. He barely ate. He moved into the castle he had bought for her at Púbol and lived there alone. In 1984, a fire in his bedroom left him with severe burns. He spent his last years in the Torre Galatea, attached to the museum. He died on January 23, 1989, at eighty-four. He is buried beneath the stage of his own museum. The last surrealist act.
