Legacy

Buried Next to Sartre

Beauvoir died April 14, 1986, in Paris at 78. She is buried alongside Sartre at the Montparnasse Cemetery. She wrote over 30 books: novels, philosophy, autobiography, travel essays. 'The Second Sex' remains a required text in universities across dozens of countries. Her phrase 'one becomes a woman' still drives debates about gender, identity, and freedom more than 75 years after she wrote it.
