The Story of Thomas
Legacy
Like Straw
On December 6, 1273, Thomas had an experience during Mass that made him put down his pen forever. 'Everything I have written seems like straw,' he said. The Summa was left unfinished. He died three months later, on March 7, 1274. The Catholic Church canonized him in 1323 and named him Doctor of the Church. His philosophy, Thomism, shaped Western thought for seven centuries and still does.
