On April 17, 1955, Einstein was hospitalized in Princeton with a ruptured aortic aneurysm. Doctors offered surgery. He refused, saying it was tasteless to prolong life artificially. He asked for his glasses and his latest manuscript. He worked through the evening. He died the next morning, April 18, at seventy-six. The notebook on his bedside table held twelve pages of equations for a unified field theory he never completed.
