The Story of Alexander

Legacy

No Room at the Palace

In early 1800, Suvorov returned to St. Petersburg from Switzerland, feverish and barely able to walk. Paul I had prepared a ceremonial welcome, then abruptly cancelled it after quarrelling with him over military dress codes. Instead of the promised rooms in the Winter Palace, Suvorov was directed to stay at the home of a relative, Count Khvostov, on the Kryukov Canal embankment. There, bedridden and alone, he died on May 6, 1800. He was 70. His last known words were: 'Long have I been chasing glory. All is vanity. My brother Cossack Platov will pray for me.' He was buried at the Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
