Origins

Early years

Aristotle was born in 384 BC in Stagira, a small town on the edge of Macedonia. His father Nicomachus served as personal physician to King Amyntas III, so the boy grew up surrounded by medical texts and court politics. Both parents died when he was young. At 17, orphaned and without patrons, Aristotle left for Athens and enrolled in Plato's Academy.

The Rise

Breakthrough

He spent nearly twenty years at the Academy — first as a student, then as a teacher. Plato reportedly called him "the mind of the school," but tension grew between them: Aristotle openly questioned the Theory of Forms, Plato's central doctrine. When Plato died in 347 BC, the Academy chose Plato's nephew Speusippus as its head, not Aristotle. He left Athens. Over the next few years he lived in Assos and Lesbos, studying marine life and laying the groundwork for biology.

Greatest achievement

In 335 BC Aristotle returned to Athens and founded his own school, the Lyceum. There he produced the works that shaped Western thought for two millennia: logic, metaphysics, ethics, politics, physics, biology. The Nicomachean Ethics was the first systematic attempt to answer the question of what makes a good life. His method — observe, classify, argue — became, in essence, the method of science.

Legacy

After Alexander the Great died in 323 BC, anti-Macedonian sentiment swept Athens. Aristotle was charged with impiety. He left for Chalcis, reportedly saying he would not let Athens "sin twice against philosophy" — a reference to the execution of Socrates. He died a year later. But his texts outlived him, the Roman Empire, and the Middle Ages. Aristotelian logic remained the standard until the 19th century. His questions about virtue, justice, and the meaning of life are still being asked.
