Those who look outward dream. Those who look inward awaken.
Carl Jung

Jung wrote this in a letter in 1916. By then he had lost his friendship with Freud, survived four years of psychological breakdown, and was building something entirely his own. He knew from experience: as long as you search for answers outside yourself, you remain asleep.

The tower

Jung built the Bollingen Tower on the lakeshore with his own hands. No electricity, no running water. He wrote there, painted, carved symbols into stone. He died on June 6, 1961, in Kusnacht, Switzerland, at 85. The Red Book was not published until 2009, 48 years after his death. Millions of people use his ideas about personality types today, most of them unaware that the system was invented by a psychiatrist who once came close to losing his mind.
