Legacy

Dawn at Weehawken

The night before the duel, July 10, 1804, Hamilton wrote letters to friends and a final note to his wife Eliza: 'Fly to the bosom of your God and be comforted.' He wrote that he intended to throw away his shot. At dawn on July 11, he and Aaron Burr faced each other on the rocky ledge above the Hudson at Weehawken, New Jersey. Hamilton fired into the air. Burr fired into Hamilton. He was carried back across the river to Greenwich Village and died the next day, July 12, 1804. He was 49. Burr was indicted for murder in two states and never held public office again.
