The Final Duel at Mashuk
On July 27, 1841, at the foot of Mount Mashuk in Pyatigorsk, Lermontov faced his former friend Nikolai Martynov in a duel. He was just 26. According to witnesses, Lermontov fired into the air. Martynov did not. The poet who had prophesied Pushkin's tragedy met the same fate. In his short life, he left behind over 400 poems and prose that still define Russian romanticism.
