The Story of Oscar
Legacy
Paris, Room 16
After two years of hard labor, Wilde left England in 1897, broken and bankrupt. He settled in Paris under the name Sebastian Melmoth. He wrote 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol' but produced little else. On November 30, 1900, he died of meningitis in a small hotel room, aged forty-six. His tomb at Pere Lachaise draws thousands each year.
