On January 28, 2017, Serena Williams won the Australian Open while eight weeks pregnant, defeating her sister Venus in the final for her 23rd Grand Slam singles title. It was the most Grand Slam singles titles won by any player in the Open Era. She gave birth to her daughter Olympia in September 2017 and nearly died from a pulmonary embolism during complications after delivery. She returned to professional tennis in 2018. She retired from competition in September 2022 at age forty. She finished her career with 23 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 Grand Slam doubles titles, and four Olympic gold medals in doubles.
