Trudeau died on September 28, 2000, in Montreal. He was eighty. His funeral train crossed Canada, and people stood along the tracks in the rain to watch it pass. He had served as Prime Minister for nearly sixteen years across two terms. He gave Canada official bilingualism, multiculturalism as policy, the Charter of Rights, and the patriated Constitution. His son Justin would become Prime Minister in 2015.
