The Last Flight
On July 31, 1944, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry took off from Corsica in a P-38 Lightning on a reconnaissance mission over southern France. He was forty-three, too old for combat by military standards, flying on special dispensation. He never returned. For decades his fate was unknown. In 2004, a diver found fragments of his aircraft off the coast of Marseille. No cause of death was ever confirmed. The mystery suited him perfectly - the pilot who wrote about stars vanished toward them.
