The Story of Johann Sebastian

Legacy

Forgotten, Then Found

Bach died on July 28, 1750, nearly blind, his manuscripts scattered among his sons. Within a generation he was largely forgotten. In 1829, Felix Mendelssohn conducted the St. Matthew Passion in Berlin, the first performance in nearly a century. The world suddenly understood what it had lost. Today Bach is considered the foundation of Western music. Every serious musician studies him. He never knew.
