I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.
Leonardo da Vinci

This quote reflects the central tension of Leonardo's life. He was the most productive observer in history and one of the least productive finishers. He filled thousands of pages with insights about anatomy, engineering, optics, and hydraulics, but published nothing. His flying machines stayed on paper. His bronze horse was never cast. He understood more about the human body than any person alive and left his anatomical drawings in scattered notebooks. The quote is his own rebuke to himself, the recognition that curiosity without execution is just entertainment.

The Story of Leonardo

Legacy

Amboise

In 1516, King Francis I of France invited Leonardo to live at the Chateau du Clos Luce near Amboise. He was given a salary, a house, and the title Premier Painter, Engineer, and Architect to the King. He brought three paintings with him: the Mona Lisa, Saint John the Baptist, and the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne. He spent his last years organizing his notebooks, sketching flood patterns, and designing a palace that was never built. He died on May 2, 1519, at sixty-seven. He left behind roughly 7,200 pages of notes. Most were scattered and lost for centuries. He never published a book. He completed fewer than twenty paintings. He invented devices that would not be built for four hundred years. He was the most curious person who ever lived, and his greatest failure was that a single lifetime was not enough.
