Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
Calvin Coolidge

The Story of Calvin

Legacy

Silent Cal

Coolidge won the 1924 election, presided over the Roaring Twenties, and left office in 1929 with strong approval. He was called 'Silent Cal' because he believed words should be spent carefully. At a dinner party, a woman bet she could get more than two words from him. He replied: 'You lose.' He died of a heart attack on January 5, 1933, at sixty. The quote about persistence outlived everything else.
