Casimir the Great Quotes
King of Poland
Casimir the Great was king of poland from Poland
“I found Poland built of wood. I left it built of stone.”— Casimir the Great
Historians who chronicled Casimir's reign gave him this legacy. In 37 years he built over 50 castles, fortified 27 cities, codified the law, and founded a university. He did not conquer. He built. He left behind a nation, not a wasteland.
The Story of Casimir
No heir
Casimir died on November 5, 1370, from injuries after a hunting accident. He was 60. Despite three marriages, he had no legitimate son. The crown passed to his nephew Louis of Hungary. The Piast dynasty, which had ruled Poland since the 10th century, ended with him. He was the only Polish king ever called the Great.
