Legacy
Colombey
On April 28, 1969, de Gaulle lost a referendum on Senate reform. 53 percent voted against. The next day he resigned. No speeches, no bargaining. He left for Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises and never appeared in public again. He died on November 9, 1970, from an aortic aneurysm. He was 79. Only 40 people attended his funeral, as he had wished.
