On April 4, 1968, King was shot on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis at age 39. His wife Coretta founded the King Center for Nonviolent Social Change the next year. Since 1986, the third Monday of January is a federal holiday in his honor. His memorial on the National Mall opened in 2011.
