Magnate and Pilgrim
Mikołaj Radziwiłł was magnate and pilgrim from Poland
“I traveled to the Holy Land not for glory, but to understand the world beyond my borders. A ruler who knows only his own land is a prisoner with a golden chain.”— Mikołaj Radziwiłł
Attributed to Radziwiłł based on his 1601 travel memoir 'Peregrynacja do Ziemi Świętej', documenting his 1582-1584 pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Egypt, and Syria.
The Story of Mikołaj
Buried in Pilgrim's Robe
After the pilgrimage, Radziwiłł transformed Nesvizh into a cultural capital. He built the Jesuit Corpus Christi Church, one of the first Baroque buildings in the Commonwealth, along with monasteries, hospitals, and schools. He established the Radziwiłł ordynacja, securing the family's wealth for centuries. His illness worsened after 1610. He lost his hearing completely, then his speech, then partial use of his limbs. He died on February 28, 1616, at Nesvizh, and was buried in his pilgrim's robe beside his wife.
