The Story of Suleiman
The Last Campaign
Suleiman's final years were marked by grief. His wife Hurrem died in April 1558. He had ordered the execution of his own son Mustafa in 1553, and another son Bayezid in 1561. In 1566, at seventy-one, sick with gout, he led one last campaign to Hungary. He died in his tent at the siege of Szigetvar on September 6, 1566, one day before the fortress fell. His death was kept secret for 48 days. He was buried beside Hurrem at the Suleymaniye Mosque.
