The Story of John
Legacy
One Line, One Century
Shedd died in 1928. In 1931, columnist Ed Howe reprinted his sayings, calling him 'an amateur.' The label stuck, but the words traveled further. By the 1960s, the ship line ran in newspapers across America. Grace Hopper quoted it in 1981. The Yale Book of Quotations included it in 2006. One sentence from a forgotten professor outlived thousands of famous books.
