The Story of Oda
Honno-ji, June 21
On June 21, 1582, Nobunaga was staying at Honno-ji temple in Kyoto with only a small guard. His general Akechi Mitsuhide surrounded the temple with 13,000 soldiers at dawn. Nobunaga fought with a spear until he was wounded by an arrow. Then he walked inside, set the building on fire, and died. He was forty-eight. His body was never found. He had unified half of Japan. Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu would finish what he started, but every stone they laid rested on his foundation.
