The Story of Alexander
Babylon, June 323 BCE
In June 323 BCE, Alexander fell ill in Babylon after a banquet. Fever grew for ten days. His generals came to see him one by one. He could barely speak. When they asked to whom he left his empire, he reportedly said 'to the strongest.' He died on June 10 or 11, aged thirty-two. His body lay in state for six days while his generals argued. No one agreed on a successor. The empire fractured within months.
