The king who has not learned the art of deceit has not learned the art of ruling.
Fernando el Católico

This quote is widely attributed to Ferdinand and reflects the political philosophy Machiavelli later analyzed in The Prince. Ferdinand was known for using religious justifications to pursue strategic goals, presenting wars of conquest as holy campaigns. His ability to combine piety with ruthless pragmatism made him the model for Machiavelli's ideal ruler.

The Story of Fernando

Legacy

He built Spain and Spain built an empire

Ferdinand died on January 23, 1516, in Madrigalejo. He was 63. His grandson Charles inherited a unified Spain, the Kingdom of Naples, and the beginnings of an empire in the Americas. Ferdinand had taken a collection of quarreling medieval kingdoms and turned them into the foundation of what would become the most powerful state in Europe. He established the Spanish Inquisition, expelled religious minorities, waged wars of conquest on three continents, and built alliances through marriages that shaped European politics for centuries. Machiavelli called him the most accomplished prince of his time. He was brilliant, ruthless, and deeply religious in a way that made his ruthlessness more effective. Modern Spain begins with him.
