On December 1, 2015, the day their daughter Max was born, Mark and Priscilla Chan published an open letter pledging 99% of their Facebook shares, then worth about $45 billion, to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The organization funds science, education, and criminal justice reform. Their first major grant went to disease research, aiming to cure, prevent, or manage all diseases by century's end. It was the largest philanthropic commitment by anyone under 35 in history.
