The Story of Scipio
Liternum
Rome gave him a triumph and the name Africanus. Fifteen years later, Cato the Elder accused him of taking bribes. In the Senate trial, Scipio did not defend himself. He reportedly said: 'On this day, Romans, I defeated Hannibal. Let us go to the Capitol and give thanks to the gods.' The crowd followed him out. He never returned to the Senate. He retired to his farm in Liternum and died there around 183 BC. On his tomb he ordered carved: 'Ungrateful fatherland, you shall not even have my bones.'
