The Story of Stephen
A Church for Every Victory
Stephen died July 2, 1504, at Suceava, after 47 years on the throne. Gout had immobilized his hands and legs. On his deathbed he told his people that Moldavia belonged not to him but to all future generations. He was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church. His face appears on every Moldovan banknote. In 2006, Romanians voted him the greatest Romanian of all time.
