The Story of Vitovt
The Crown That Never Arrived
By the 1420s, Vytautas ruled a state stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea. He hosted the Congress of Lutsk in 1429, attended by the Holy Roman Emperor, the King of Denmark, and the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order. He was promised a royal crown, which would make Lithuania a kingdom equal to Poland. The crown was sent from Rome. Polish nobles intercepted it at the border. Vytautas died on October 27, 1430, at roughly 80 years old, still a duke, never a king. Lithuania would not have another ruler of his stature.
