Leader of Rukh, Death Near Boryspil
In 1989 Chornovil co-founded the People's Movement of Ukraine, Rukh, and became its leader. In the 1991 presidential election he received 23 percent of the vote, losing to former Communist Leonid Kravchuk. He served as a People's Deputy until his death. On March 25, 1999, his car struck a truck turning across the Boryspil highway. He died at the scene. The investigation closed the case as an accident. His associates have never accepted that verdict. In 2000 he was posthumously named Hero of Ukraine.
