Weeks after victory in Europe, voters threw him out of office. He returned as PM in 1951, served until 1955, and won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953. He spent his final years painting at his country home, Chartwell, where he created over 500 works. On January 24, 1965, Winston Churchill died at ninety. His state funeral drew leaders from 112 countries. Cranes along the Thames dipped in salute as his coffin passed.
